South Georgia Polar Cruise – May 2016

Described as the “Alps of the South Atlantic”, South Georgia is the diamond of the string of islands visited on our epic 20 day expedition to Antarctica and surpasses even the white continent itself in terms of wildlife. South Georgia’s glacier-sculpted fjords and mountain-framed valleys host huge numbers of sea birds including King, Gentoo, and Macaroni Penguins and Wandering and Light-mantled Sooty Albatross. Here you will see thriving colonies of Southern Elephant Seal and Antarctic Fur Seal, and perhaps a Leopard Seal. The surrounding waters are impressively rich in cetaceans, which is why in decades past South Georgia was a major whaling base.

WHY WE LOVE SOUTH GEORGIA
The world’s largest colonies of displaying King Penguin and their fluffy youngsters.
Utterly dramatic scenery with spectacular glaciers.
Colonies of enormous Southern Elephant Seal.
Some of the planet’s greatest concentrations of marine wildlife.

Please feel free to contact us, should you wish to join Simon in January 2017 – he will be visiting South Georgia on a 20 day Antarctic voyage aboard the luxury vessel Silver Explorer

Southwards, a magnificent Alpine country, illuminated by the rising sun, rose slowly from the sea; there were mighty fells with snowy crowns and with sharp, uncovered teeth, around the valleys through which enormous, broad rivers of ice came flowing to the sea.

– J. Gunnar Andersson describing South Georgia Island, 1902

OUR FAVORITE TIME TO VISIT
For wildlife it is best to visit in late December or after New Year. January is ideal. In November and early December whale sightings are less reliable.
