The Falkland Islands should be best known for their extravagant Southern Ocean wildlife! In particular, seabirds – about 70% of the planet’s Black-browed Albatross population nests on these wild islands. Lying on your back on the rolling hills cloaked in tussac grass, with hundreds of albatross soaring above you is certainly one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences on our planet. These are exquisite birds, with snow white heads, delicately shaded “black-brows” and large, heavily hooked yellow and pink bills. They hover effortlessly overhead, using the updrafts that blow off the Atlantic ocean – the ultimate hanging mobile for wildlife enthusiasts! The islands also shelter the highest number of Gentoo breeding pairs in the world and King and Magellanic penguin rookeries abound. Commerson’s Dolphins are particularly playful and pretty and can be viewed easily from Stanley.

This is the first stop on our epic 21 day Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica expedition and one of the reasons we recommend taking your time in getting to Antarctica (rather than the shorter “Antarctica express” trips which skip the Falklands and South Georgia)!

For us, the highlight of travel is soaking up the magic of wild places. In addition, top priority is that the lodgings complement the wildlife experience in absolute parallel, and of course, that the property’s overall ethics prioritise sustainable operations and that the lodge contributes to conservation and restoration.

We take great delight each year in exploring exciting new properties opening their doors for the first time, as well as taking stock of all our old favourites who may have upgraded their offerings or undergone a complete transformation to new beginnings.

We feel like we’ve taken a fresh new breath with the end of all travel restrictions tangibly visible on the horizon and we cannot wait for our guests to check-in to these fabulous newbies and old favourites.

We are always here if you would like to learn more.

Warm regards from Jen, Simon and the Bellingham team.

We’re beyond excited to introduce for the first time, Aramness, Gir, India. A sensational new forest lodge on the outskirts of Sasan Gir National Park, Aramness showcases the very essence of Gujarat culture with all design elements and décor sourced locally, which is completely in sync with our sustainability focus. The lodge first opened its intricate Indian doors in December 2021 and is distinctly design-led by Fox Browne Creative, who are also responsible for the design of many of our most beloved camps in Africa, as well as the Taj Safaris collection in India. Gir National Park is way off the Tiger centric routes in India and was established to protect the last wild population of genetically distinct Asiatic (or Indian) Lion on Planet Earth. Learning first-hand the fascinating story of co-existence between these magnificent cats and the nomadic Maldhari tribe, who are largely responsible for keeping these beasts from the brink of extinction, is certainly a highlight. Numbers on game drives are limited to 4 guests and personalised service takes priority. The protected teak forest with its extraordinary landscapes and abundant bird- and wildlife (the park holds 38 mammal species in total as well as 300 bird species), coupled with the magnificence of the lodge has put Gir top of mind when considering an exploration of India’s wildlife, especially for guests who have already experienced the Tiger reserves.

OPENED: December 2021.
RATES FROM $500 per person (launch rate).

Vumbura Plains has always been a favourite. This legendary Wilderness Safaris Camp is set in the very heart of the magical Okavango Delta in Botswana. We are delighted to share that Vumbura Plains has undergone an extensive refurbishment, the result of which, plays beautifully into our mission to match an exceptional wildlife experience with that of the lodgings where our guests lay their heads between explorations. The majesty of the Delta is completely unique – this swampland of rich and highly protected ecosystems with its varied and plentiful wildlife in abundance, not to mention the birdlife, harbouring over 500 species of birds, 24 of which are globally threatened, and 85 recorded species of fish and Cate Simpson, interior designer, has done it great justice. In her own words, she waxes lyrical: “It is this core purpose, combined with Vumbura’s beautiful Delta setting that has inspired the design, décor and furnishings for the refurbishment; not only rejuvenating the camp, but weaving these extraordinary conservation and cultural stories into bespoke design pieces that bring the local culture alive for our guests in a tangible way”. Wilderness Safaris is a fellow partner of The LONG RUN.

RE-OPENED: April 2022.
RATES FROM $1650 per person.

This is the new baby sister to Sable Alley and located on the site of the old Pangolin camp. It is wonderful to have this price point in such a pristine wilderness area in Botswana ’s Okavango Delta. Little Sable is for thrills rather than frills (don’t expect plunge pools, Wi-Fi or hairdryers!) but is a perfectly comfortable base from which to explore the Khwai Private Reserve. We prefer Little Sable to Sable Alley, because she is smaller and more intimate with only 8 tents, and the unexpected bonus is that she is (for now) the less expensive camp.

OPENED: July 2021.
RATES FROM $495 per person.

Ralf Bousfield, owner of the iconic Jack’s Camp on the fringes of the Makgadikgadi Pans, has birthed a newbie this year! A striking new Safari destination in this vast concession of natural beauty, Duke’s Camp draws inspiration from the crystal-clear channels of the Okavango Delta and is named in honour of ‘Duke’ Sarefo, the custodian of this bountiful piece of wilderness. Duke was born 80 years ago on the very island that the camp now occupies, and his ancestral roots run deep into these sandy soils. Pitched on raised wooden decks in a canopy of ancient Ebony and Leadwood trees, the 12 luxurious tents offer front-row seats to glorious views over the flood plain and seasonal lagoon.

OPENING: June 2022.

A visit to the Mighty Zambezi River absolutely has to be on the bucket list of every intrepid traveller in search of magic in wild places. The longest East-flowing river in Africa, the Zambezi rises in Zambia and flows through Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique where it empties into the Indian Ocean, crossing no less than 9 spectacular National Parks. The river supports large populations of many different animal species and birdlife is immensely abundant. Lolebezi is the latest property in the African Bush Camps Collection and may be the most spectacular of them all, and is getting ready for its first guests next week! The lodge is set on the banks of the Zambezi in the wilderness of the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia. Like a sensational framed panoramic photograph, the one kilometre private river frontage is the focal point from every area with the location and design of the lodge and suites dictated by the view of the mighty Zambezi. With four suites and two double family suites, it caters to romantics and families alike. Sustainability is front of their ethical code and has been embedded into the lodge design with the entire operation being powered by off-grid solar energy. African Bush Camps is an affiliate member of The LONG RUN.

There are of course, those of us who love a spoil and for whom opulence, luxury and intense attention to the finer details are… well… simply a must.

As travel and tourism start to revive it has been heartening to see a number of lodges flinging open BRAND NEW doors. Some old favourites have undergone complete make-overs, providing a great excuse to return (or visit for the first time). These lodges have been steadfast in their commitment – not only are they more beautiful than ever before, but we have seen the bar lifted for excellence in sustainability with new state of the art Tesla energy systems and other positive changes.

Contact us if you would like to see first-hand what we are raving about.

Warm regards from Jen, Simon and the Bellingham team.

KHWAI LEADWOOD

Beks Ndlovu, African Bush Camps founder, has a longstanding relationship with the Basarwa people from the Khwai community. His team have identified enthusiastic community members and upskilled them to become part of the new camp. Khwai Leadwood is fully sustainable with a solar farm and a bio-rock system. The decor celebrates local heritage with various basket works and inspiration from traditional homesteads. The mammalian carnivore diversity is remarkable and leopard, lion, wild dog and hyena are all prevalent in this secluded area of the Khwai concession. Activities include night drives, boating and scenic helicopter rides. African Bush Camps is an affiliate member of THE LONG RUN.

Tswalu’s freshly refurbished exclusive-use retreat, Tarkuni, is perfect for a multi-generational family or friends reunion. It is brighter, lighter and airier but refashioning some of the older pieces has ensured authenticity and been minimally consumptive. The new pool is smaller and more water wise, aligning with Tswalu’s sustainability journey – Tswalu joined THE LONG RUN in 2020 and is aspiring to even higher levels of sustainability. The homestead has five suites with a private hospitality and guiding team. Take long drives or walks, track elusive and iconic species, marvel at ancient rock art, join researchers in the field and linger with habituated meerkats. We highly recommend a longer stay to experience all these activities, while also taking time to relax and enjoy the superb hospitality.

After four years of protecting this large concession (over 200,000 acres) and restoring the wildlife (the area was previously hunted), Great Plains have commenced the build of Tembo Plains camp. The camp has views of the mighty Zambezi River, arguably the most beautiful river in Africa with swimming elephants and hippos. But Tembo Plains is not about ticking the wildlife boxes, it is supporting the entire conservation area, fueling an economic system that allows underprivileged communities to benefit, helping them find peace and prosperity in living with wildlife and in nature.

We are delighted that Little Kulala (Wilderness Safaris’ retreat in Namibia’s Sossusvlei area) has re-opened following an extensive refurbishment. We have always loved this lodge, set in the dunes, for its luxury of space and solitude in the Namib Desert (and private access to Sossusvlei dunes!). Maintaining a light footprint, Little Kulala features an all-new 100% solar energy system. Its 11 desert suites have been expanded featuring a spacious deck, sala and plunge pool. Each room’s rooftop area is perfect for sundowners, private dinners and stargazing. The sala has a roll-out bed for siestas or for sleep-outs under the stars. Wilderness Safaris is a fellow LONG RUN partner and forms part of a collection of the world’s most sustainable, nature-based travel destinations.

This has always been an icon and we are eager to view the new changes. The new Jack’s retains the old-world glamour it has always been adored for. Maintaining the much-loved 1940s style, five generations of the Bousfield family have collected antiques and artefacts from around the world, each one telling a story and adding to Jack’s distinctive design character. Each tent, with private deck and pool is now an impressive 270sqm under canvas. With the lodge run on solar and wi-fi free, the true luxury at Jack’s is switching-off to enjoy the pristine desert silence.

The main dining and lounge area boasts wide-angle vistas overlooking the wildlife-rich lagoon, while a new wellness centre and gym – shared with its brand-new sister camp Little Duma Tau – includes an inviting shaded deck, a lap pool, spa and snack deli.
This is a legacy project for the Tollman family and represents the biggest investment into a safari lodge of this size in Africa. The lodge is resplendent, a “living gallery”, with bespoke works commissioned exclusively for the property by some of Africa’s hottest young artists. Life-changing experiences include: sleep-outs in a three-story steel baobab tree, game drives, glass-bottom mokoro and motorboat excursions, and ‘feet-in-the-water’ sundowners. The lodge takes sustainability very seriously, is plastic free, and powered with Tesla solar-hybrid energy technology; we would not expect any less for a new lodge with such a privileged location in the heart of Botswana’s precious Okavango Delta.

From our newsletter sent out 1 December 2020.

We are positively bursting with happiness that South Africa is now open to international travellers. The country is looking lush and vibrant after some excellent rains and we could not think of a better destination to restore, reset and rejuvenate after a really tough year.

WHY SOUTH AFRICA – the fun stuff
* Outstanding wildlife, not only the “Big Five”, but also a host of other exceptional wildlife including some of the best cheetah, meerkat, aardvark, pangolin and shark-diving on the continent.
* Privacy – we can arrange for as much privacy as you desire, from private dining and private game drives to private villas and private air travel.
* Fine wines and excellent cuisine.
* As we head into summer you can escape the northern winter.

WHY SOUTH AFRICA – the boring stuff
* Excellent health and safety protocols – arguably some of the best in the world.
* World-class private hospitals and medical care that is easily available in the event of an emergency.

A night at a safari lodge is not the cost of a room, no matter how spectacular. Choose wisely and this is foremost a meaningful contribution to safeguarding wildlife and the well-being of local communities that support conservation. With travel on hold, wildlife documentaries and virtual game drives have kept us inspired but they can’t be compared to the real thing. The good news is, there has never been a better time or reason to tune in, zoom out and start planning for that magical safari!!! Our lodge partners and their rangers have been on the frontlines of conservation, protecting our precious wilderness areas so that we don’t lose decades of hard work, and they are counting on our continued support when travel opens. With this in mind we have curated a list of some of our favourite partner lodges that are committed to protecting wildlife and supporting their local communities during this time. Please feel free to contact us about post COVID-19 specials and our flexible terms.

Warm regards from Jen, Simon and the Bellingham team

TSWALU KALAHARI - SOUTH AFRICA

Tswalu is a labour of love for the Oppenheimer family who took responsibility for this remarkable reserve in 1998. Their commitment to conservation has seen indigenous species re-introduced and the restoration of the Kalahari, undoing earlier attempts at farming and hunting. The Tswalu Foundation exists primarily to support ecological research at Tswalu. Tswalu’s national and regional importance as a habitat was acknowledged in 2014 when it was designated as a formally protected area. In its new incarnation as a private wildlife reserve and conservation success story, Tswalu’s aim is “to leave the world better than how we found it.” The lodge and reserve also provides upskilling and employment opportunities for the local community and provides them with meaningful careers, as well as enhanced health and education services.

LONDOLOZI - SOUTH AFRICA

The Varty family’s conservation ethos has always resonated with that of Bellingham Safaris, we relish the opportunity to send our guests to Londolozi. Situated in the middle of the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, this family owned property is certainly one of the reasons why the Sabi Sand has become one of the most rewarding savanna wildlife properties on earth. One of the conservation success stories that illustrates the impact Londolozi has had on wildlife viewing worldwide, has been the habituation of leopard which began in the 1970’s and forever altered big cat viewing experiences. The Varty family pioneered South Africa’s eco-tourism industry by abandoning unsustainable hunting safaris popular in the early twentieth century in favour of photographic safaris. We believe the Vartys have successfully created not only a wildlife sanctuary, but also a superb luxury safari underpinned by sound eco-tourism principles; making Londolozi one of the premier safari products worldwide.

SEGERA - KENYA

Established by philanthropist, Jochen Zeitz in 2005, the 50,000 acres of wilderness that make up the Segera Ranch and Retreat, proves that luxury can be sustainable. By dropping fences, sharing information and opening migration corridors, Segera has returned a working cattle ranch into a thriving wildlife conservation area. What was previously overgrazed land, struggling to support the surrounding communities and wildlife, is now thriving. Along with the establishment of the Conservation Unit Programme with the Laikipia Wildlife Forum to train rangers in conservation issues, Segera runs a 20-acre agriculture plot at one of the local primary schools. The reciprocal relationship Segera has with surrounding communities is something they are rightfully proud of and an integral part of their success. Citizen Science is utilized at the ranch, with programs to empower local elders to take control of the issues that concern them, rather than relying on external experts.

MASOALA FOREST LODGE - MADAGASCAR

The rich forests with an impressive assemblage of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects combined with an idyllic setting of sandy beaches and the tropical decor of swaying palms make this one of our top destinations in Madagascar. The lodge serves as a living cultural museum, where traditional artefacts and utilitarian objects manufactured by the local communities are in daily use and on display, providing a sense of pride and ownership for the local community. Masoala Forest Lodge seeks to complement the efforts of Madagascar National Parks, the Wildlife Conservation Society and Zoo Zurich in the conservation of this rainforest and the Antongil Bay. This is embodied in a philosophy of earth-friendly design and operation, while providing an alternative and sustainable source of income to the local population.

JAMTARA WILDERNESS CAMP - INDIA

Amit Sankhala, is the grandson of Kailash Sankhala who dedicated his life to tiger conservation and was the founder of Project Tiger. Amit grew up spending time in wildlife rich parts of India, and as a young man stepped into the shoes of his forefathers taking forward the family mission of tiger and nature conservation. Further to Jamtara (and his other eco-tourism lodges), Amit is also an active trustee of Tiger Trust, and his commitment to training field guides has had a remarkable impact improving standards and enriching the experience of wildlife travellers. This all shines through at his Jamtara Camp in the jungles of Pench, where he spreads awareness and musters support for the survival of the tiger.

CAIMAN ECOLOGICAL REFUGE - BRAZIL

Caiman, home to some of the best wildlife viewing in South America, is situated in the heart of the Southern Pantanal. Here one has the unique opportunity to explore a staggering 53 000 hectares of privately owned land, a vast safe haven for wildlife, which has been created by implementing a ban on hunting and reserving substantial portions of land solely for ecotourism. The wildlife enthusiast visiting Caiman is welcomed by an astounding array of neo-tropical wildlife. Jaguars tend to be shy and hard to find, but Oncafari, the ground-breaking project to habituate this apex predator, has had much success and there is no doubt that Caiman currently offers the very best jaguar viewing on Earth.

We look forward to a new decade promoting conservation through responsible wildlife travel and would LOVE to have you join us in experiencing these new lodges, as one of the first guests.

MARLIN BEACH AZURA

OPENING: 15 July 2020

LOCATION: Benguerra Island, Mozambique

Forget Mauritius – think remote, authentic, pristine and making a difference. This is Azura’s newest addition and their third property in Mozambique. The hotel was previously known as Marlin Lodge and burnt down after a fire in 2012. Azura does “beach” better than anyone in Mozambique, so we are delighted that they have added this fresh and funky (and more affordable) option to their offerings.

Rates from $525 per person.

ALSO OPENING IN MOZAMBIQUE THIS YEAR: Kisawa Sanctuary

NGALA TREEHOUSE

OPENED: 10 February 2020

LOCATION: Ngala Private Game Reserve, South Africa

A treehouse in one of our favourite reserves. This brand new sleepout is totally off the grid (there is solar power). Ngala Treehouse, located 5km from Tented Camp on the Timbavati River, is an overnight wilderness experience that complements a stay at one of the reserve’s two permanent lodges. A tapas-style picnic dinner is set up in the safety of an enclosed boma beneath the stars. Guests are then left in luxurious solitude for the night, provided with a radio and mobile phone for use in case of inclement weather or other emergencies.

Rate is ZAR8500 per person for the whole of 2020.

(THE NEW) JACK'S CAMP

OPENING: 30 April 2020

LOCATION: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana

An old favourite re-imagined. The brand-new Jack’s Camp will retain its much-loved 1940s style. The guest tents will be made much larger with additions such as Natural History Museum cabinets, wood burning morso stoves, outdoor (and indoor) showers and a private plunge pool. The new mess tent and the iconic nomadic Persian tea tent and swimming pool pavilion will be re-designed with the addition of a sun deck and a dedicated spa tent. This has always been an icon and we are eager to view the new changes.

Rates from $1795 per person.

(THE NEW) DUMA TAU and LITTLE DUMA TAU

OPENING: 1 August 2020

LOCATION: Linyanti, Botswana

DumaTau has always been a favourite but the old camp has been in need of some TLC and will re-open with expansive guest rooms (they will double in size) with indoor and outdoor showers and private plunge pools. The main dining and lounge area boasts wide-angle vistas overlooking the wildlife-rich lagoon, while a new wellness centre and gym – (shared with its brand-new sister camp Little DumaTau) – includes an inviting shaded deck, a lap pool, spa and snack deli. Situated just to the north on the same lagoon frontage, Little Duma Tau will have just four spacious tented guest rooms.

OPENING: March 2020

LOCATION: NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Kwessi Dunes is located deep in the NamibRand, a vast desert wilderness of over 200,000 hectares (one of the largest private reserves in Africa). With its rolling desert plains and backdrop of craggy mountains and iconic red dunes, it’s not about chasing big game but rather soaking up the beauty of the colourful landscape and its desert adapted wildlife. Each chalet has a separate ‘star gazer’ room, completely open to the sky. There will be plenty to do with (eco-sensitive) quad biking, scenic drives and walks, hot air ballooning, helicopter flights, horse riding and day trips to Sossusvlei which lies just to the North.

Rates from ZAR6500 per person.

ALSO OPENING IN NAMIBIA THIS YEAR: The new Little Kulala (June 2020)

Unquestionably one of THE top “bucket list” wildlife experiences, gorilla trekking is truly life enriching. For enquiring minds, the allure of tracking our evolutionary cousins, in their natural habitat, is undeniable. In order to make the choice of where to travel easier, we have put together a brief comparison between the 3 countries where gorillas can be safely trekked; Uganda, Rwanda and the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville).

Gorilla taxonomy is split into 2 species: Western gorilla comprised of two subspecies (Western lowland gorilla and Cross River gorilla) and Eastern gorilla again comprised of two subspecies (mountain gorilla and Eastern lowland gorilla). The 2 subspecies of gorilla which can be easily visited in Africa are the endangered mountain gorilla (just over 1060 living in the wild) in Rwanda and Uganda; and the more numerous but critically endangered Western lowland gorilla (global population of around 100 000) found in the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.

In both Uganda and Rwanda the trek takes place with a maximum of 8 guests per gorilla family, for a maximum of one hour. In Congo it is 4 guests in a group, for a maximum of one hour. Although trekking for mountain gorilla in Uganda and Rwanda is different from a habitat perspective and some of the wildlife encountered, the gorilla encounters are very similar. Trekking for Western lowland gorilla in Congo is however a very different experience, and most certainly more challenging from a viewing and photographic perspective – this is because they tend to rest under cover so they can usually only be observed when feeding or active (mountain gorilla rest in open clearings). Seeing them clearly through the marantaceae (a shrubby plant), even from close is more difficult.

WHERE TO TREK FOR MOUNTAIN GORILLA (Gorilla beringei beringei)

Rwanda
If you have little time, or are adding gorilla trekking to a larger safari, head to Rwanda – Volcans National Park is an easy driving distance from the airport or can be accessed by a short helicopter flight. This is where Dian Fossey (the famous “Gorillas in the Mist” American zoologist) was based, and the place where gorilla conservation began. The spectacular Virunga Volcanoes provide a magical backdrop while viewing the gorillas. Permits are the most expensive at USD 1500, however with the recent increase in permit costs, the communities’ revenue share also increased from 5% to 10% – this goes towards building schools and hospitals, providing access to clean water, and other projects. With the likes of Singita, Wilderness Safaris and the One&Only there are now superb options for the luxury traveller.

Uganda
If you have more time, Uganda is a good choice as it is a country with an excellent safari circuit and wonderful chimpanzee viewing. The gorilla tracking permits are cheaper than Rwanda, but the distance from the airport to the gorillas is further and involves a small charter plane flight (the arduous 10 hour drive is not advisable). Trekking takes place in the Rwenzori Mountains with Bwindi Impenetrable Forest being the most famous departure point. Uganda has 10 national parks in addition to Bwindi, the most popular being Queen Elizabeth National Park, known for its quality savannah big game viewing as well as excellent birding.

Why we love Rwanda and Uganda
Gorilla trekking which tops many explorers’ bucket lists
Chimpanzees seen in their natural habitat
An unsurpassed diversity of primates
Big game including large herds of African elephant and Cape buffalo, rafts of hippopotamus, lion, leopard, Ugandan kob, topi, zebra, giant forest hog and much more
Excellent birding with the most productive montane forest birding in Africa with 23 Albertine Rift endemics and specials including shoebill and green-breasted pitta.

LEARN MORE ABOUT UGANDA AND RWANDA

WHERE TO TREK FOR WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (Gorilla gorilla gorilla):
Republic of Congo (Brazzaville)
If you want to see the Western lowland gorillas, and are looking for a little more adventure, and a visit to a pristine tropical rainforest, head to the Republic of Congo. Go gorilla trekking in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the North-West of the country, near the border with Gabon. This is not to be confused with the DRC (the “not so” Democratic Republic of Congo), which is a different country. Fortunately, the government of the Republic of the Congo has put in place conservation efforts to conserve species such as chimpanzees, forest elephants, and gorillas from poaching and deforestation. Supporting Congo’s national parks such as Odzala-Kokoua helps to ensure that they remain a safe place.

Why we love Congo (Brazzaville)
Western lowland gorilla trekking
Experience one of the last remaining truly wild places in Africa
Help support the conservation of this pristine region
See a host of other primates
This rainforest habitat is the second largest only to the Amazon
Forest species such as forest elephant, forest buffalo and red river hog

BISATE LODGE- RWANDA

This premier Wilderness Safaris camp is located in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, with dramatic views of the peaks of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes rearing up through the Afro-alpine forests of nearby Volcanoes National Park. Bisate’s vision of reforestation and rehabilitation means that each guest contributes to biodiversity conservation and local community upliftment – making a far-reaching positive impact on an iconic endangered species: the mountain gorilla.

SINGITA KWITONDA LODGE AND KATAZA HOUSE - RWANDA

Set on 178 acres (72 hectares) on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Kwitonda Lodge boasts eight luxurious suites, while Kataza House, an exclusive-use villa, features four spacious suites. Arguably one of the most sustainable lodges on the continent. Singita Volcanoes National Park honours Rwanda’s people and fertile land by touching lightly on the land, while contributing significantly to conservation, community partnerships and ecotourism.

GORILLA FOREST CAMP-UGANDA

An old favorite of ours – Gorilla Forest Camp, “GFC”, was the first luxury camp in Bwindi; it was agreed by the then president and Geoffrey Kent that GFC would bring guests who would pay for Gorilla permits in order to help fund a new national park to protect the Gorillas. As the only concessionaire luxury camp within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is the perfect base from which to track mountain gorilla. In fact Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp often receives regular visits from the gorillas themselves. The ten private luxury tents are ecologically respectful, contemporary-yet-classic in style, and blend in sensitively with the dramatic African mountain landscape.

NGAGA DISCOVERY CAMP - REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Ngaga Camp overlooks a beautiful open glade within primary forest above a forest stream. The Camp is situated within the overlapping home ranges of several groups of Western lowland gorillas, two of which are habituated. From the six elevated guest rooms, wraparound walkways allow you to peer directly into the forest canopy. The Camp is constructed from natural materials using traditional techniques.

A note on the other two sub species, since we are wildlife nerds

Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli) – this is a subspecies of the Western gorilla and is critically endangered, they are found in Cameroon and Nigeria, the population is around 200 – 300 individuals.

Eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri) – this subspecies of Eastern gorilla, also known as Grauer’s gorilla, is found in the lowland tropical rainforests of the Eastern DRC. Because of violence in the region the population numbers are unknown. Kahuzi-Biega National Park is home to the largest population of protected Eastern lowland gorillas, and although park staff are re-establishing control, rebels and poachers have invaded the park.

“I’d like to see a pangolin…” – a phrase that strikes fear into the heart of even the most seasoned safari guide. Notoriously shy and elusive, to spot a pangolin in the wild is considered the holy grail of safari sightings where ever they occur. In this month’s newsletter, we feature this endearing creature which sadly, currently carries the title of the world’s most trafficked mammal.

What is a Pangolin?
There are eight species of pangolin worldwide, all threatened with extinction, and half of them live in Africa. In South Africa, we are lucky to have the Temminck’s ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii), one of the larger species found on the continent. Affectionately known as the ‘great gardeners of the Earth’, this almost other-worldly looking creature plays a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Pangolins, being a keystone species, keep the numbers of other species in check. Case in point are termites, a preferred food source of ground pangolins. Eliminate pangolins from the equation and the effect of an exploding population of termites would have a very negative knock-on effect to the environment. Although they look much like scaly armadillos, they are more closely related to bears and dogs and constitute their own taxonomic order.

Tipping the scales
With four of the eight species of Pangolin occurring in Asia and the population decimated by insatiable demand, the market has now shifted its focus to Africa. The effect is devastating. These mammals have scant protection against the humans hunting them; their overlapping, impenetrable scales offer adequate protection from natural predators such as lion but sadly do nothing to protect them against human poachers. When threatened, pangolins roll into a ball (a very stressful exercise for them) and stay that way until they perceive the threat to have passed. Sadly these gentle creatures are easily picked up when in this defensive state, and carried off to their unnatural end – either the bushmeat trade or the medicinal markets of Asia. Their meat is regarded as a delicacy and much like Rhino horn their scales are revered in Asian traditional medicine. Pangolins are protected by both national law in the countries that they occur and by a ban on international commercial trade. In 2019 a shipment of over 14 tons (an estimated 36 000 pangolins) was seized in Nigera. Although law enforcement is promising, most of the trade goes undetected.

Experience conservation in action
Thanks to those who recognise the importance of this keystone species, all is not lost. In South Africa, andBeyond Phinda Private Reserve and Tswalu Kalahari Private Reserve have both galvanised conservation efforts to benefit the pangolins in Africa, dedicating much-needed resources of research and funding through ecotourism initiatives.

Phinda Private Game Reserve, on Kwa-Zulu Natal’s North coast, has recently partnered with the African Pangolin Working Group to reintroduce Temminck’s ground pangolin where the species has for some time been locally extinct. These pangolin have been retrieved from poachers and rehabilitated. Our guests are able to contribute to this important project by participating in the “Pangolin Conservation Experience” with our friend and conservationist Simon Naylor, reintroducing pangolins back to where they rightfully belong, helping to reverse the local extinction at Phinda. The reserve has 24 hour anti-poaching surveillance making it a safe haven for these pangolins that have been given a second chance.

At Tswalu Private Game Reserve our guests are able to connect with Wendy Panaino and learn about her important research which involves tracking and monitoring pangolin, this is of course done with extreme respect and in this way many of our guests have viewed pangolin foraging and going about their lives freely.

Talk to us to learn more about the plight of the pangolin and what some of our partners in tourism are doing to save them from extinction. If you wish to visit properties making an invaluable contribution to the success of this unique species (and with this, increase the odds of spotting them in the wild), reach out to us here.

Warm regards from Simon, Jen and the Bellingham team.

The Varty family’s conservation ethos has always resonated with that of Bellingham Safaris. We relish the opportunity to send our guests to Londolozi, the Varty family owned property within South Africa’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Not only for the exceptional service and wildlife, but also because the restoration of this pristine private reserve over many years has been an ongoing labour of love by Dave, Shan and their family.

Two countries united by a single cause
Amongst the many conservation tasks taken on by Londolozi has been the habituation of leopard which it began in the 1970’s and forever altered big cat viewing experiences worldwide. Habituation should not be confused with “taming”, habituation is the gradual process of removing fear of humans (instilled through years of persecution). The animal gradually becomes relaxed (still wary and wild, but not afraid) in the presence of 4×4 vehicles filled with wildlife enthusiasts. This allows the cats to be easily viewed and photographed which adds huge value to these beautiful animals and the wildlife property. During Simon’s time working as a field guide at lodges in the Kruger National Park and the neighbouring Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve (including Londolozi) he worked with several properties undertaking habituation work and receiving the benefits from habituation work carried out. “My personal experience of leopard habituation efforts led me to co-found Projeto Oncafari with my good friend Mario Haberfeld. Together we took this method of respectful habituation to Mario’s home country, Brazil, to enable the jaguar to play its role in conservation.”

Why travelling with us make a difference
Our choice of properties is based not only on guest experience and quality of service but also on a demonstration of commitment to conservation, green operations and tangible benefits to the local communities.

Founders Camp honours past guests and staff who have contributed to building Londolozi Game Reserve. It is their efforts which have distilled the legacy of the past 30 years into a common mission.

The campfire has burned here for over 85 years making Varty Camp the symbolic heart and soul of Londolozi.

Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island (after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo), yet its ecological variety rivals that of an entire continent; it is for this reason that Madagascar is often referred to as the ‘Eighth Continent’. This legendary uniqueness is nowhere better reflected than in its mammals, where every native terrestrial species is endemic to the island. Most people have never heard of spiny tenrecs yet there are five of these fascinating little insectivores arranged in four genera on Madagascar – a beautiful example of the diversity one can expect on the island.

In November I will be exploring two of my favorite wildlife destinations in Madagascar – Masoala National Park on the wet, Eastern side of the island and Kirindy Special Reserve on the dry, Western side of the island. Accommodation at Kirindy is rather basic, but the support of wildlife enthusiasts empowers the protection of the many unique species that inhabit the area. Staying here also offers the best chance to see Madagascar’s largest carnivore, the Fossa, another excellent reason to visit.

There are still three remaining places on our guaranteed small group departure (22 November to 1 December 2019). Please let me know if you are interested in joining me on this unique journey.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS TRIP

Realistic opportunity to encounter a representative species of every lemur and chameleon genus.

Chances to encounter Madagascar’s largest carnivore, the Fossa.

An opportunity to see and photograph rare bird and reptile species on both sides of the island.

Famous Madagascan landscape, including “Baobab Avenue”.

Please contact us if you would like to join me on this unique journey.
Warm regards from Simon
