The restoration of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique stands as one of the world’s most inspiring conservation success stories. Once devastated by civil war, the park’s ecosystem and wildlife were nearly wiped out. In 2004, philanthropist Greg Carr joined forces with the Mozambican government to transform Gorongosa into a sanctuary for biodiversity and sustainable development. Through the Gorongosa Restoration Project, millions have been invested in rehabilitating landscapes, reintroducing wildlife, and engaging local communities. Rewilding efforts have rejuvenated the park’s ecosystem, now teeming with over 100,000 large animals and a vast array of birds and other wildlife, solidifying its reputation as a global biodiversity hotspot.

Gorongosa Safaris, the project’s tourism arm, is set to unveil their brand-new Chicari Camp. The same tented camp architects who built Tawana, Liuwa, and Ngala Treehouse are now busy with construction of Chicari.

This truly is a hidden treasure, a place so wonderfully obscure that you would be forgiven for having to turn to Google just to pinpoint its whereabouts (off the West Coast of Africa). The very first andBeyond (then ccAfrica) lodge we had the privilege of visiting was Phinda Forest Lodge, back in the mid-1990s. Phinda Reserve had only recently been established in 1991, with parts of the land having previously been used for farming. We are thrilled to announce the launch of the newest Wild Expeditions camp in the Okavango Delta – Karangoma. Wild Expeditions stands as a pioneering collective of authentic safari camps and mobile expeditions operating in remote corners of Africa, spanning from Madagascar (Masoala Forest Lodge) and Ethiopia to Zimbabwe and now Botswana. We are absolutely delighted that there is going to (finally!) be a decent offering at Kibale!!! This area is prime for Chimpanzee trekking but has always lacked on the accommodation front. Kibale Lodge will comprise eight deluxe rooms and a villa, plus a spa, sauna and pool. Three deluxe bandas will be open by May 2024 and five more by the end of 2024. The lodge, just half an hour from Kibale Forest, boasts views of the Rwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the Moon) from the main ridge line, looking towards the west and the Queen Elizabeth plains and the Kazinga channel to the south. This is undoubtedly one of the most exciting openings of a new lodge on the African continent, by the much loved Angama team. Angama Amboseli is an intimate lodge of just ten tented suites set in the private Kimana Sanctuary, near Amboseli National Park with maximal heart-stopping views of the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. Angama Amboseli guests will enjoy exclusive traversing and unrestricted game viewing in an area known for its incredible density of general wildlife, Africa’s large cats and most excitingly, the famed big-tusker Elephants of Amboseli.

Tswalu’s new camp will comprise of six individual tented safari homes, each functioning as a stand-alone, independently run mini camp. With at least 100 metres (330 feet) between each home, guests are assured of privacy and seclusion throughout their stay. The camp’s safari homes each have unimpeded views south across the grassy plains to distant hills in the valley beyond. Each home comes with a dedicated homathi, or butler and a private chef. This newbie has been opened by two veteran Snow Leopard trackers, Dorjay Stanzin and Abdul Rashid. When we first started running Snow Leopard Expeditions, the only choice was camping in Ladakh National Park, but slowly a few lodges have opened and we are delighted that for the first time there is something to cater to guests looking for more of a “safari style” offering. The new suites celebrate the Great Silk Road heritage and each have centrally heated rooms with 24/7 running hot water, hand woven yak rugs, Tibetan inspired furnishings, and down duvets to keep you blissfully cocooned. BISATE LODGE

Location: on the edge of Volcans National Park, Rwanda

Wilderness Safaris is opening a brand new premier camp in Rwanda which will showcase the areas’ rich wildlife from Gorillas to butterflies. Their ambitious reforestation project is well on its feet and several thousand indigenous trees have already been planted. As with all Wilderness Safaris lodges the environmental footprint is exceptionally light.  At the lodge you can expect presentations from Gorilla experts covering topics such as their genetics, their endangered status, their diet and behavior, why they do not survive in captivity and much more. We have always enjoyed the Gorilla sightings at Volcans and are delighted with this new development.

 

MIAVANA ISLAND

Opening: 30 April 2017
Location: Nosy Ankao, Madagascar

Designed by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens (the duo behind North Island and Angama Mara), Miavana is pioneering the first ultra-luxury lodge in Madagascar. Whale watching, lemur walks and Scuba diving will all be on offer at this island sanctuary. Although superbly stylish, the camp will have a low impact, and their aim is to conserve the island’s natural resources whilst providing world class marine and land based activities. Madagascar is of extreme importance in terms of its unique flora and fauna but has always been limited in its luxury offerings, this will certainly take things to the next level. We are excited to see much needed investment taking place on this magical island.

 

AWASI IGUAZU

Location: Iguazu Falls, Argentina

This boutique property is located just 15 minutes from the falls on the banks of the Iguazu River, within the forest and built on stilts for minimal environmental impact. The lodge will feature a private-guide system and excursions will include biologist-led journeys to the falls, sunset boat rides, and visits to archaeological sites in the area.

 

SILO HOTEL

Opened: March 2017
Location: Cape Town, South Africa

We know that this is by no means a safari lodge but the V&A Waterfront is the perfect base from which to explore the natural wonders of Cape Town – including Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark boat excursions, penguin viewing and flower safaris to name a few. The Silo is simply breathtaking in its architectural beauty which is complemented by 360 degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain.

 

MATETSI RIVER LODGE

Opened: August 2016
Location: Matetsi (40km from Victoria Falls), Zimbabwe

Following an extensive rebuild, the much beloved Matetsi Lodge is back in business. We were thrilled when Matetsi had been taken back under the wing of andBeyond – Simon and Jen first visited the property in the early 90’s when traveling as students through Zimbabwe and later when it was first run by andBeyond. We look forward to a swim in the 20 meter long rim flow pool that stretches along the banks of the Zambezi River.
